Social Entrepreneurship in Guatemala: How to Make a Positive Impact in the Community

Social entrepreneurship in Guatemala is a form of business that seeks to generate a positive impact on society and solve social and environmental problems. Also known as the Fourth Sector, it is situated between the public sector, philanthropic and traditional businesses. These companies are governed by the principles of sustainable business and seek to create change and value for society.

Social entrepreneurship uses a business as a means to achieve its objectives and is characterized by being self-sustainable, scalable and generating profits to continue transforming reality. These organizations provide innovative solutions to social problems such as poverty, social exclusion, disease and climate change, among other challenges facing society.

Social entrepreneurship provides jobs and professional growth opportunities for people with innovative ideas. In addition, it has become a strategy to combat poor quality jobs and enable people to carry out projects for self-employment, generating more job security and a better quality of life.

There are certain factors to take into account when starting a social business. The process is similar to that of creating a traditional business, but with a focus on the collective interest and the improvement of society. Social enterprises present different business models that allow them to help society through products, services, labor or raw materials used.

Social entrepreneurs need resources to bring their ideas for change to reality. For this reason, NGOs have emerged that offer financing opportunities for this type of projects, providing viability and continuity to social entrepreneurship.

Currently, numerous organizations in Guatemala support social entrepreneurship and promote social benefit, positive environmental impact and financial economic profitability. Some examples of successful projects are:

  • Specialisterne: Promotes the labor inclusion of people with autism, taking advantage of their specific skills in the IT sector.
  • Auara: Seeks to end the lack of drinking water in the world, selling bottled water and allocating all profits to projects for access to clean water.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility Companies: Align themselves with the needs of all stakeholders with whom they interact, taking into account their impact on natural resources and ecosystems.

Social entrepreneurship in Guatemala has great potential to enable poor people and those at risk of social exclusion to have greater access to quality jobs, better paid and with greater prospects for the future.
