Javier Ortíz: It was founded by the government of General Justo Rufino Barrios in 1879, and entered public service on June 24 of the following year. The library was founded to spread all kinds of useful knowledge, since Guatemala City, despite its importance, lacked an establishment of this nature.According to the founding agreement, the Library would function in one of the rooms of the Economic Society building and its first volumes would be those of the Society, and those of the libraries of the extinct Pontifical University of San Carlos Borromeo, called the National University from from 1875, the Polytechnic School, the School of Arts and Crafts and those of the extinct convents of the regular clergy. On June 24, 1880, the library was inaugurated with great pomp in one of the rooms of the Economic Society; Dámaso Micheo was its first director. When the Sociedad Económica was dissolved by government order on April 20, 1881, its premises were occupied by the National Assembly and the Library became part of the latter.Historical reviewThis cultural center founded by the Government of General Barrios in 1879, and put into public service on June 24 of the following year, has made a pilgrimage through different sectors of the city, until finding an uncomfortable rest in the place it occupies today, in the room next to the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences. The agreement in question in its consideration phase, among other things, indicates that this center will be one of the most effective means of spreading all kinds of useful knowledge, "and also warns that this capital, despite its importance, lacks an establishment of this genre where everyone can attend to acquire the instruction they like, with the reading of selected works”.According to the founding agreement, the Library would function in "one of the most appropriate rooms of the Economic Society building" "and its first volumes would be those of the Society itself, as well as those existing in the private libraries of the University, the School Polytechnic, the School of Arts and Crafts and those belonging to the extinct convents”.When the Sociedad Económica was dissolved by government provision dated April 20, 1881, its premises were occupied by the National Representation and the Library then moved to the building where until then the Assembly had functioned.

Gabriel Guatemala: With the renovation works that were carried out until its recent reopening to the public, the library offers specialized spaces for documentary research. It has adequate reading rooms to provide a good service to its users. Among its environments there are rooms for primary, and pre-primary as well as for very young children, this with furniture appropriate to their ages and special reading material for each age. There is an Internet research room and the national newspaper library, which houses Guatemalan newspapers that can be consulted by the general public and old newspapers that are only allowed to be consulted by accredited researchers.
